ok .... the palm is in dmesg :

usb 1-3: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB0 (or usb/tts/0 for devfs)
usb 1-3: Handspring Visor / Palm OS converter now attached to ttyUSB1 (or usb/tts/1 for devfs)

lsusb shows this :

Bus 001 Device 033: ID 0830:0003 Palm, Inc. Palm M515
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 0000:0000

ok now in /dev/usb/tts i get 0 and 1
and I also seem to get a /dev/ptmx entry when I point kpilot or Jpilot at /dev/ptmx .... it seems to do something here is the output from both devices in kpilot ... its says device link ready then i push the hotsync button on the palm cradle and the sync button on the software and fark all happens .... this is really jacking me off ?

21:25:00 HotSyncing. Please press the HotSync button.
21:25:18 Using character set ISO 8859-15 on the handheld.
21:25:18 Pilot device /dev/usb/tts/0 is not read-write.

With Palm devices connecting via USB in Linux, you typically have to press the hotsync button on the Palm (or cradle) first, i.e., before you tell your desktop software to sync. From your description, it sounds like you're issuing the sync command on the desktop before telling the Palm to sync, which is the other way around.

There's more detail, including some more troubleshooting information if it turns out you need it, in the pilot-link USB document.

There is one thing ... I have USB support compiled directly into my kernel instead of it being modular .... should I have it as a module, I was under the impression that it didnt make a difference ... but then again I dont know alot about USB ..

Mine are as modules, but it shouldn't matter whether the USB support is there as modules or built-in. The more important question: is USB working well otherwise? (I.e., do you have any other USB devices that are working? What do you see in /proc/bus/usb?)

Two more thoughts. First, from the log you posted earlier: "Pilot device /dev/usb/tts/0 is not read-write" -- what are the permissions on that file? You could be running into a permissions problem: your user doesn't have sufficient priviledges to access the Palm. Even if the permissions seem right, maybe try 'pilot-xfer -l' (list databases) as root, just to see if that works.

The second thought: are you using KDE or Gnome? If either has a Palm-related daemon (Gnome, for example, has gpilotd; I don't know about KDE), it's worth making sure that it's not running (disable that feature, and/or kill the processes). If gpilotd is running, for example, normally no other software (pilot-xfer, jpilot, etc.) will succeed in talking with the Palm.

Hope that helps; best of luck!

Thanks very much, I knew it was something simple ... its the permissions .. didnt think to run it as root just to see if it was able to connect , my next question is what should the permissions be on /dev/usb/tts in order for it work for the user .... i dont really wanna chmod 777 it all ..... is their a group i can put myself in or should I chgrp ive added myself to the usb group will that be sufficent .....? I dont think I should be running as root for palm syncing ..

thanks again ......

DUH !!!!!!! i dont know what I was thinking ...cheers
