OK, I just finished installing Gentoo, and I've installed xorg. What window manager do you reccommend? (I know this is a matter of personal choice for many, but I'm clueless about all of them, so I figured I'd ask.)

KDE and Gnome both work pretty well, I am using KDE, but sometime I would like to try Gnome out more. I have only worked with it a little.

There's plenty to try, so the choice depends on your tastes. If you want big, fat, and pretty with everything at your fingerprints then you'll want KDE. Or not quite so fat but more handholding then Gnome would be more to your liking. But, if you like getting your hands dirty then you'll want fluxbox, fvwm, icewm, or one of the other config from scratch window managers.

I think I'll try KDE first, based on that. I don't care for the handholding thing (one of the reasons I dislike Windows). I'd go with one of the "get your hands dirty" options here, but I don't really know enough about Linux yet to do so effectively.

Thanks!

KDE/GNOME for a full blown DE
Fluxbox/FVWM for a nice small WM

XFCE4 is a good halfway house between a full DE (KDE/Gnome) and a lightweight WM (*box, FVWM).

Blackbox! Its a great window manager, doesnt eat up a bunch of resources, though it lacks the eye candy of the fuller wm's; like kde or gnome etc.

If you want eyecandy, you may want to give enlightenment a try. It has features I have not seen yet in any other WM, like "windows are flying in, when opened" or a water effect on the bottom of the screen. It's currently maintained by Kwo, who brought it up to scratch with current applications but integration of other software could be a lot better (e.g. there is no such thing as a system tray in E, so each app, which makes use of a tray, opens up two windows, one containing the tray icon the other containing the app itself)
