Installing from Gentoo 2004.2 AMD 64 Universal CD onto:

AMD 64 3000+
Gigabyte GA-K8NS Pro (nForce 3 250 chipset)
512 Mb RAM
250 Gb HD --> should be @ /dev/hda but is NOT
CD-RW (@ /dev/hdc, as should be)
DVD-RW (@ /dev/hdd, as should be)

Problem: there is no /dev/hda.

Hard drive contains other OSes, using about the first 70 Gb on the drive. This should not, to the best of my knowledge, present a problem. BIOS recognizes drive and has no problem with the size. LiveCD dmesg shows recognition of the drive:

> hda: Maxtor 6Y250P0, ATA DISK drive
> Using anticipatory io scheduler
> ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 15
> hdc: YAMAHA CRW-F1E....

...but there's no /dev/hda, even though /dev/hdc and /dev/hdd exist. There's one more resources-assignment line for hdc and hdd, and two lines where drivers for them are loaded, but no further mention of hda in dmesg at all.

I vaguely remember that a mknod command might create /dev/hda, but I don't remember how to use mknod and there's no man on the liveCD.

I'm also worried that Gentoo might be choking on the size of the drive; I really hope that's not the case. Linux has always tended to overlook HW limitations other OSes wouldn't in my past experience.

The install CDs were bought from Gentoo, so I have reasonable trust that the ISOs were burned properly and uncorrupted. Unfortunately, I have no other AMD 64 machine to test them on. I did download and burn an AMD 64 Universal iso and it gives the same problem.

Explanations of the cause of the problem and suggestions for workarounds so I can install are equally desired. I'm starting to see just how much hand-holding Debian has always done for me, and how much I have to learn. Please help!

modprobe ide-disk is the command you're looking for...
