Hey guys, I will try to explain this as much as possible.

So i have this brand spankin new notebook that i ordered and built :D.

So far, its been pretty good, except for the fact that few things dont work

First, I have a little dilemma with my SiS graphics system. One is that i dont know the exact model number is, and two I can seem to get it working at all!

I have a sorta semi framebuffered console working and when I try to compile SiS support in the graphics drivers section of my gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.7-r1 kernel the console text becomes near impossible to read and fuzzy, then xorg wont even start because of swomething about not working in framebuffer mode and needing busId's 8O , as soon as I remove the SiS support, everything is peachy again in the console, xorg starts and were all happy, except for the uber ugly 640x480 and 60 hz, so as sketchy as that description was, if you have any ideas at all, they are welcome.

After that, i have a couple minor questions I felt I might as well put in this thread instead of opening more:

1. Is there anyway i can make it so when i an using the touchpad and i tap it once or twice, those can be read as left mouse clicks, notebook people should know what I mean :)

2. can I make my system so that when i plug in a USB mouse, it automatically detects it and deactivatges the touchpad and activates the mouse?

Thanks alot guys :)

About a year ago I had a laptop with a SiS. Now, first off, the 3d-support provided by SiS chips are minimal. Second, kernel support for SiS chips is not the best. Back in 2.4.18 you actually couldn't compile a kernel with support for it without voodoo.

But, now on a more positive note.
To find out what card you have:
Code:
lspci -v

One of the entries shoud be your graphics card with all the info you need.

AS for the framebuffer, laptop screens tend to be a bit picky as to what resolutions they can run. Even if they support a resolution, quality might be very bad. So first start there. Find out what the best resolution you can have is and boot up with framebuffer in that mode. There is a good tutorial about bootsplash and framebuffer support on the forums.

Once that is up and running, set X to run in the same mode. Use Xfree86 -configure to get a good starting config.

As for question 2, I am pretty sure my laptop did that. I think that was hardware-related and as such OS independent. No memory of doing anything to activate it though.

And for question three I am fairly sure the answer is no. What you can do is have two mice in your XF86config. Your built-in should be "Corepointer" and your USB mouse should have an option called "AlwaysCore" Search the forums for more detailed descriptons of how to do it.

OK, I hope that helped. I am geting a bit rusty on laptops as I sold myne a quite a while ago.
