I'm using xorg and ion3. I followed the xorg and fonts mini-howto
When i run ion, all the fonts are ugly and hard to read. Here's what i have for fontpaths:
Code:
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/TTF/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/corefonts/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/sharefont/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/freefont/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/artwiz/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/ttf-bitstream-vera/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/terminus/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/Type1/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/local/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/misc/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/Speedo/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/CID/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/encodings/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/util/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/lfp-fix/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/"
        FontPath   "/usr/share/fonts/unifont/"

Any insight?

Actually it seems that your fonts are probably installed correctly. You do have some TTFs installed (corefonts and vera fonts were detected ok). I don't know anything about ion, but I'd guess that your ion configuration is what's causing the font problems.

You have to add these fontpathes to /etc/fonts/local.conf, too. This controls the antialiasing for applications.
(See About font in X11 (Xfree, xorg, whatsoever topic.)

Add the paths to /etc/X11/fs/config - may help.
Also, link the fonts to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts
I mean create symlinks to the font dirs, which reside in /usr/share/fonts/, in the dir /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts (I solved some problems with Xorg fonts doing so).

No go... linked all the font dirs to /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts. Here's /etc/fonts/local.conf:
Code:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<!-- /etc/fonts/local.conf file for local customizations -->
<fontconfig>

  Enable sub-pixel rendering
        <match target="font">
                <edit name="rgba" mode="assign"><const>rgb</const></edit>
        </match>

        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/TTF/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/corefonts/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/terminus/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/unifont/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/Type1/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/freefont/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/artwiz/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/local/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/misc/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/Speedo/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/CID/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/ttf-bitstream-vera/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/util/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/sharefont/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/lfp-fix/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/75dpi/</dir>
        <dir>/usr/share/fonts/100dpi/</dir>

</fontconfig>

If it is the Ion settings, then TTF should work in another WM, say fluxbox. I'll check on that...
btw, if I don't run XFS, will that require settings changes?

Try this:
as root, cdc into a dir with true type fonts and execute
/usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontscale .
/usr/X11R6/bin/mkfontdir .

this will create font.scale and font.dir in the directory. Not sure if it helps though.
PS Do you have freetype installed?

Also, do you have the line:
Code:
Load "freetype"

in the "Module" section of you /etc/X11/xorg.conf?

I have:
Code:
    Load        "type1"
    Load        "speedo"
    Load        "freetype"
    Load        "xtt"

strange... they seem to work randomly.

I have :

Code:
    Load        "type1"
    Load        "speedo"
    Load        "freetype"
#    Load        "xtt"

in my xorg.conf.
AFAIK the modul xtt must be unload to get it work proper.
