This is my first post, so I'll try to make it as intelligent and coherent as possible. I've done alot of googling to find some information on this, but I find alot of stuff that seems irrelevant, or so it seems. All I want to do is (through X's or Gnome's configs) have certain key combinations run a program.

To be more specific, I am running MPD (Music Player Daemon), and there is a simple, command-line client which connects to the daemon and accept simple parameters such as skipping tracks, changing volume, etc. So, I simply want to script odd key combinations (what I used to use on windows) that I can use anywhere to change tracks and such. Does anyone have any idea about this, or know of a simpler/better/easier way to do what I'm asking?

Take a look at:
/apps/metacity/global_keybindings/run_commandXX
(those are the key bindings)
and:
/apps/metacity/keybinding_commands/command_XX
(those are the commands that will be executed).

I have 3ddesk mapped to Alt-1/2/3 for example to switch desktops...
