Finally, after extensive research I settled on an iBook G4 instead of a pc laptop.

My iBook has the following specs:
1.2ghz G4 ppc processor
768MB Ram
Airport extreme installed
D link bluetooth dongle
Combo drive (cd writer, dvd player)
14" display

So far im very very happy with it, I am putting Gentoo on it as soon as I get back to England (where I have cable connection).

I have been playing with OS X for quite some time now, and it is a truly amazing OS. Anyone know of any good BSD tutorials that perhaps apply directly to maintaining OS X? Any tips on the differences between using terminal (bash) in linux and os x?
Finally, what file system should I use if I want to access it from both os x and gentoo?

:D

My favorite is the O'Reilly book called, OS X for Unix Geeks. It's a great start to learning about the more unix-like side of OS X.

i got my iBook G4 a few weeks ago. I went with the more low end 12" model to save money. OS X is a nice piece of work for what it does, but i find that it puts "the kid gloves" on my computing experience and so i'd like to learn more about it's UNIX-like aspects.
I am looking forward to installing gentoo on it so that i can do serious sound work outside of my house. I've found that there are few free sound programs for mac os, and after working with linux and free software, stealing (ie cracking) expensive software suites makes me rather uncomfortable, even if it's only for educational purposes.

Thanks for your replies :D

I am looking forward to putting gentoo on mine as well. I have already downloaded cdrecord and used it with great success on Os X, so it seems a lot of my open source requirements can actually be fulfilled with os X on its own.

I have however spotted a dead/stuck pixel on my beatiful tft screen :x I have tried massaging it very carefully without any success (its still there)

It has a red/pink colour.

Any advice? Im quite sure Apple wont replace it for me.

Sorry to here about the pixel, tough luck. I'd try giving apple a call with tears and everything and see if you can get something out of it. Worth an try eh?
