Hi guys,
I'm not willing to stuck u with the same old problem, but I read most of howto's and threads of the forum about the argument, and tried to follow and apply them, not getting it to work properly.
I run an Asus L3436 Series, with kernel 2.6.5:
Code:

sensi gunja # uname -a
Linux sensi 2.6.5-gentoo-r1 #2 SMP Thu Aug 12 01:45:19 UTC 2004 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

and an ATI Radeon 7500 Mobility, with 32 MB Ram and Intel AGP chipset, as follows:
Code:

sensi gunja # lspci
...
0000:00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corp. 82845 845 (Brookdale) Chipset AGP Bridge (rev 04)
...
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M7 LW [Radeon Mobility 7500]
...

I recently give up with Xfree ( suxks!!!) and moved to X.org, and I run the last stable version from portage tree.
Following instructions of many threads I compiled the AGPGart support and the ATI Radeon DRM as can bee seen in kernel config:

Code:

 <*> /dev/agpgart (AGP Support)
        < >   ALI chipset support
        < >   ATI chipset support
        < >   AMD Irongate, 761, and 762 chipset support
        < >   AMD Opteron/Athlon64 on-CPU GART support
        <*>   Intel 440LX/BX/GX, I8xx and E7x05 chipset support

and

Code:

[*] Direct Rendering Manager (XFree86 4.1.0 and higher DRI support)
   < >   3dfx Banshee/Voodoo3+
   < >   3dlabs GMX 2000
   < >   ATI Rage 128
   <*>   ATI Radeon

My xorg.conf calls the xorg built-in DRM for ATI by invoking dri and glx as modules, and radeon as driver for video card:

Code:

    Load        "type1"
    Load        "freetype"
    Load        "dri"
    Load        "glx"
....
....
Section "DRI"
          Group 0
          Mode 0666
EndSection
....
....
Section "Device"
    Identifier  "Ati Radeon Mobility 7500"
    Driver      "radeon"
    BusID       "PCI:1:0:0"
    Option      "AGPmode" "4"
    VideoRam         32768
    Option      "EnablePageFlip" "true"

EndSection

Everything seems to work fine, as can be seen in xorg log (at least i cannot find anything not working, hope really U can):

Code:

sensi linux # cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

and glxgears touches 1200 fps, that it's not bad for this adapter as follows:
Code:

5310 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1062.000 FPS
5741 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1148.200 FPS
5453 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1090.600 FPS
20829 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4165.800 FPS
24670 frames in 5.0 seconds = 4934.000 FPS

with the last two values with glxgears in background.

The problem is finally that when I try to launch TuxRacer I get the strange and unexplainable error (if I run it as user in games group or as root indipendently):

Code:

and for foobillard the same:

Anyone can help?

Try the following when X is running,

xpdyinfo | grep glx

and post the output here.

Tks Beforegod. Fast and furious. With a new advice.
Here it goes:
Code:

gunja@sensi gunja $ xdpyinfo | grep GLX
    GLX
    SGI-GLX

It' s seems I actually have the extension.
What can i deduce from it?
thks

The Problem is that the kernel drm drivers are for xfree and not for xorg.
Xorg itself depots the drm driver in /usr/src/xorg-6.7.0-r2, but this drivers are for kernel 2.4 as far as i remember.

So there is an USE Flag which is named (insecure-drivers).
A quick look in the ebuild tells, that with this option some dri/drm drivers will be compiled which are not in a good state. Which state they are i can't tell.. so just try this out, and let the kernel drm drivers away.

/edit

This option is only at the xorg-x11-6.7.99.2 ebuild available. So try these ..

Code:

quickpkg xorg-x11
emerge -C xorg-x11
echo x11-base/xorg-x11 >> /etc/portage/package.unmask
export USE="insecure-drivers"
emerge "=x11-base/xorg-x11-6.7.99.2"

Thks beforeGod!
Just As the nickname tells!
I'm going to try this exactly now.
I let u know, and thks a lot. I suspected something quite strange about xorg but couldn't recognize that, or actually I didn't know anything about this incompatibily. Hope that will work!

I tried to do what you suggested.
Than with my old xorg.conf, it managed the new xorg-x11 6.7.99.2 to work (radeon driver), at about 1300 fps in glxgears, i.e. a little improvement than before. Maybe it was still usign the kernel drm driver.
Then I recompiled kernel 2.6.5 without drm support for ATI radeon, but still with AGPGart driver for Intel chipset, and I'm getting slow glx performances, i think just because the drm driver of xorg is not being used while he is still searching for kernel module radeon.
Which is the driver i have to use? Or i got something wrong zapping drm kernel radeon support away (is that what u meant)? What about agpgart?
glxinfo tell me I obviusly don't have direct rendering, while xorg.log shows problems in finding kernel drm module radeon, while xdpyinfo show GLX and SGI-GLX.
Hope that I have understood all I did.
Thks. Anyway I'll post any improvement or understanding.

Find the way to emerge it...hardy!
The fluidCVS ebuild of xorg-drm missed an inherit, i.e /usr/portage/eclass/fluidcvs.eclass. But now i got it.
It is compiling the new radeon driver for kernel 2.6.
But got this error

Code:

ACCESS DENIED open_wr: /usr/src/linux-2.6.5-gentoo-r1/.tmp_versions/radeon.mod
/bin/sh: line 1 .tmp_versions/radeon.mod: Permission denied

/bin/sh: line 1 ./.__modpost.cmd: Permission denied

--------------------------- ACCESS VIOLATION SUMMARY -----------------------------------
LOG FILE = "/tmp/sandbox........log

_____________________________________________________________________

It seems I cannot write for sandbox configuration ( i actually don't know exactly what it is) that i cannot modify kernel modules.
Plz help!!! Still trying.

PostPosted: Wed Aug 18, 2004 6:24 pm    Post subject: Segmentation fault Reply with quote

As soon as i compiled the driver i tried to make a modprobe, having the module loaded, but with a worrying segmentation fault during the modprobe.
Then I tried to restart X having still problems in drm, even if drm kernel module is now found. Here goes the Xorg.0.log:

Code:

sensi gunja # cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep drm
(II) Loading sub module "drm"
(II) LoadModule: "drm"
(II) Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/linux/libdrm.a
(II) Module drm: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
drmOpenDevice: node name is /dev/dri/card0
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999)
drmOpenDevice: open result is -1, (Unknown error 999)
drmOpenDevice: Open failed
[drm] failed to load kernel module "radeon"
(II) RADEON(0): [drm] drmOpen failed

Then obviously x disables dri, and goes with xaa.
Dmesg instead run as follows:
Code:

[drm:radeon_register_regions] *ERROR* cannot reserve FB region
Unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at virtual address 00000000

Of course, and unusefully:
Code:

sensi gunja # xdpyinfo | grep GLX
    GLX
    SGI-GLX

Something with AGPGart kernel built-in support? Or with FrameBuffer?
I won't believe I have been working so long, only to get a sad segmentation fault. What it's strange is that before at least direct rendering worked, i mean in glxinfo. And now it's now wrkng.
Ran out of ideas. Trying to reemerge it.

I got the driver work with kernel AGPGart, no FB, and no Xfree DRM. Little better performances in glxgears and DR enabled.
Drm seems to work fine, from dmesg:
