Adding TrueType fonts to XFree

I've been trying for days to install TrueType fonts for XFree and can't find any unambiguous information anywhere, including gentoo.org. Specific questions:

Can Win2K font files be used directly or do they need to be massaged? I tried putting them in /opt/ttfonts thinking that they'd be recognized automatically and suddenly every KDE action slowed down by a factor of 100.

If Win2K fonts can't be used directly, where can I find a collection of open-source TT fonts WITH UNAMBIGUOUS INSTRUCTIONS on how to install them??

Well, I guess I didn't search as diligently as I thought I had, because I found the answer on the XFree web site, duh. Haven't tried it yet but hope to soon.
