I`ve just emerged and installed gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.9-r1. The gensplash works fine but there are TWO broblems:

1) In silent mode the progressbar doesn't work.
2) In silent mode only the boot process follows the silent booting screen. The shutdown/reboot process still follows the verbose screen.

What can I do?

[Sorry, Deathwing00 :) ]

So, please, give me a tip. Everybody said that gensplash is better than bootsplash, but the earlier specified problems still haven't solved:

1) no progressbar in silent mode
2) and the silent mode activates only at startup, not in reboot or shutdown.

???

Make sure u have splashutils installed...

The first problem I don't know, perhaps it can be solved by edititng ur /etc/conf.d/splash to enable the override emssages ("rebooting system", "starting system") I have those enabled and for me it works.

The second problem can be solved by emerging splashutils and editing the /etc/conf.d/splash to enable the SPLASH_TTYS so that the splashes are on all TTY's. Then execute "rc-update add splash default" to have it in ur runlevel. That should prevent it from diasppearing on shutdown.

I've emerged splashutils, I've edited /etc/conf.d/splash and I've added splash to the default runlevel. In fact I've followed exactly the gensplash howto from gentoo wiki. But the progressbar still doesn't work and the silent mode doesn't avtivaye on shutdown/reboot. How does gensplash works on your systems?

for some reason, in my grub.conf, I dont get a progressbar when using "vesafb-tng" but when I just use "vesafb" I get the progressbar. you may want to give that a try
