I searched the documentation on portage but couldn't come up with anything. Does mean it is 'required' and has been installed?

Do you mean if I do something like: Code: | # emerge baselayout -p
These are the packages that I would merge, in order.
Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] sys-apps/baselayout-1.7.8-r1 to / |
Well, that "R" means replace. The package is already compiled and installed, and you are simply going to replace it. It is pretty pointless unless you do something like update your USE flags or something that is decided at compile time.
