phpBB and ldap

Hi all.

Trying to install the ldap patch for phpBB but I don't really understand what to do. I hope I can get a few hints here.

I've installed phpBB and set up mysql to store the settings and it works fine. No problems.

Then I downloaded the zip file containing the ldapauthmod where I found a install.txt file with some php code. http://phpnuke.by.com/phpBB2/ldapAuthmod_1_1_8/install.txt

Ok, I did not understand anything of it so I googled and found this tutorial.

I understand what he is saying, but do I need to do all this OPEN, EDIT files manually? I feel stupid.

I was hoping to USE both mysql and ldap auth ( http://cerebus.sandiego.edu/~jerry/blog/article.php?story=20031126163833533 ), does anyone have a working phpbb with ldap support?

Hope someone can push me in the right direction.

That is correct. At some point in time, you will need to edit the file by hand. There is another mod that can be installed that will then allow you to install other mods in a much more automated manner. This mod is called easymod, but I don't recall the direct link, you can find more info on it at http://area51.phpbb.com

In other news, I was testing a cvs version of what will become phpbb v2.2, and it has external auth (ldap) already builtin. I don't know how well, if at all, it works. Of course, the cvs version, is not really supported so if you were to choose using that, you'd go it alone.

I found and tested easymod, it works good, however ldapauthmod is not easymod compliant

I guess I'm stuck with editing the 17 files by hand then if you don't have any other suggestion.

Running the cvs version is tempting, but since it will run in a prodution enviroment it can't be unstable, do you have any experiences with it?

Unfortunately, my experiences with it are only testing experiences. As much as I'd like to use it, at the moment it doesn't support an upgrade path, so I find myself unable to import several years worth of data.

Additionally, it is cvs, and there is no telling what works 100% & what doesn't. And I suspect that, like you, I don't want to chance it.
