hi,
my new gnome desktop does not load. it just displays the welcome screen (the little gnome-foot), but does not show any more activities. after a while, it starts switching screen resolutions and then returns back to the login-screen.

when started in failsafe mode, gnome works fine, but displays two error messages: 1) not enable to start screensaver 2) no soundmixer found.
i think, that these errors are not the problem.

many thanks for help
cu nabla

I have used Gnome 1.3 and gnome2 for a while, and it has worked perfectly, but when I reinstalled to gentoo 1.4 yesterday, gnome didnt work.
The same thing as you are describing are happending. I start gdm and login, the splashscreen comes up, changes resolution and exits back to gdm.
If I add gnome-session to .xinitrc and start x with "startx", gnome starts, but I get a crash error on nautilus and xscreensaver.

I have only emerged gnome, nothing else,(except metalog and vcron...)

X works normaly when I use blackbox, so it isnt a X problem.

Looks like a bug or something :)

It would have been wise if you used the search with "gnome AND failsafe", this would lead you to this:

Can people comment as to whether maKKus' pointer addresses their situation?

Gnome is now starting, but nautilus, xscreensaver and gnome-console is still crashing... It works just like it did in "fail-safe mode"...

I have used gnome2 some time now, and never had problems like this

Leoric, could you look at the last entry of your user's /etc/passwd entry? Is it possible that there is no login shell?

Hey!, :) I thought it added /bin/bash by default; gnome-terminal is now working. Thank you!

3 down - 1 to go. Nautilus is still not working...
