I am getting this annoying message that keeps telling me about a package I attempted to emerge in the past. Now it won't go away and I cannot emerge ANYTHING.

Here is the message:

bash-2.05b# emerge --search firefox
Searching... \Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/emerge", line 2331, in ?
searchinstance.execute(mysearch)
File "/usr/bin/emerge", line 545, in execute
if not portage.portdb.xmatch("match-visible",package):
File "/usr/lib/portage/pym/portage.py", line 4710, in xmatch
myval=match_from_list(mydep,self.xmatch("list-visible",None,mydep,mykey))
File "/usr/lib/portage/pym/portage.py", line 4696, in xmatch
myval=self.gvisible(self.visible(self.cp_list(mykey)))
File "/usr/lib/portage/pym/portage.py", line 4806, in gvisible
if db["/"]["porttree"].dbapi.xmatch("bestmatch-list", mykey, None, None, [mycpv]):
File "/usr/lib/portage/pym/portage.py", line 4703, in xmatch
myval=best(match_from_list(mydep,mylist))
File "/usr/lib/portage/pym/portage.py", line 3537, in match_from_list
raise KeyError, "Specific key requires an operator (%s) (try adding an '=')" % (mydep)
KeyError: "Specific key requires an operator (net-wireless/linux-wlan-ng-0.2.1_pre17) (try adding an '=')"

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Is there an entry in your world file for that package?

Moved from Installing Gentoo.

Or check any of your /etc/portage/ files and either add an = sign in front, or remove the version information.

Sorry, can you tell me what or where a "world" file is?

I am new to Gentoo. (But loving every minute of it)

/var/cache/edb/world
Did you create any /etc/portage files and check them like I asked before?

I added the = sign, I tried it without the = sign. No luck. it still gives an error message and talks about a totally different package from the one I just tried to install. The one that keeps popping up in the error message was my "attempt" to install my wireless card. But I don't understand why that would be mentioned when I type emerge search firefox?!

You have /etc/portage files? Or you tried to do that in your world file? Please post whatever you were trying to edit, what does it complain about how?
