I already have alsa configured on my system but everytime I do emerge sync and then world, this damn alsa driver 1.0.5a emerge would fail. I really dont want to play with it, but I am just getting pissed off when I see emerge world giving errors due to this.

OK, you are running a 2.4 kernel I see. In that case I assume you have a soundcard that is unsuported by OSS. Otherwise I would start with OSS whick is very good on the cards it suports. Besides, it is included in the kernel and the fewer things you need to reemerge after every kernel upgrade, the happier you will be.

Otherwise the 2.6 kernels seem to work quite well, and have ALSA included.

I'm getting the same problem. And my sound only works as root, and not a normal user.

I think the default Gentoo way is to have the sound devices being owned by audio:audio. So in order to use the sound system you need to be part of the audio group.
