|
|
I am about to compile a minimal 2.4 kernel.
There are some options that I am not sure of if I need them. Please help me know.
Do I need these since I don't have any ISA cards?
General setup/ISA bus support
Plug and Play configuration/ISA Plug and Play support
Networking options
Packet socket
Unix domain sockets
IP: multicasting
Do I need all these? I don't really know what they are.
IDE, ATA and ATAPI Block devices
"Generic PCI IDE Chipset Support" Do I need it since I have "Intel PIIXn chipsets support" enabled?
Network device support/Dummy net driver support , Do I need it?
Ethernet (10 or 100Mbit)/ EISA, VLB, PCI and on board controllers, Do I need it since I have 3c590/3c900 driver support?
Thanks. |

Sorry I can't help you with the others, but what I did when I compiled my kernel was to remove reference to every other ethernet card with the exception of the one I had installed on my PC (the 8139too). System works fine.
Hope this is of some assistance...

No, as far as I know they have no effect, if you don't have or aren't using an ISA bus/cards. I always deselect them on computers that don't use ISA cards, and I've never had any trouble with it.

I think the "Generic PCI IDE chipset" option is only needed to use chipsets that aren't supported by any other specific driver. I don't think I've ever disabled it, but I doubt it would affect the PIIX driver. There is really only one way to find out for sure though: try it ![Smile :)](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Nice. Now it is only the networking options that I am not sure about. Does anyone know what they are for?
Networking options
Packet socket
Unix domain sockets
IP: multicasting (I don't use DHCP so I guess that I don't need this one, or?) |
