Howdy, and sorry for both my newby-snes and my poor grasp of english.
I had installed Gentoo again in the past, with problems wich a quick search in these forums managed to solve. Now I`m stuck...
I bought a new M/B and an Athlon 64 3200, so I re-installed everything. The first shock came not when I learned that I need different sources / binaries / versions in general for some of the programs I used, but when I realized that many of those weren`t available in a "64 flavour" and, at the same time, the use of the "32bit" versions could cause problems. Ah, well...
The second shock, and the reason I`m writting this, is the fact that although the generic RADEON driver works in Xorg, fglrx doesn`t. And it`s not a Xorg problem, but something I miss from my kernel, or some other mistake I did.
As far as the kernel options go, I`ve checked and double checked that support for VIA is enabled, but didn`t find any specific support for any specific chipset on my MB (or maybe I didn`t realise it was something relevant) and thus I haven`t set anything special. AGP, as far as I know, exists but cannot be enabled or disabled (has three dashes left of it) and contains onlye one entry for a chipset that is of no use to me. RADEON driver is both enabled and disabled, since I tried both ways - none works.
The drivers installed fine, fglrxconfig run fine, and the whole problem (for now) is that fglrx refuses fanatically to work. Any ideas?
Thanks in advance for any replies...
<EDITED, updated info + change of thread title to include agpgart problem>

I wrote it before but maybe you didn`t notice it...
The problem doesn`t lie in Xorg, as far as I know, because when I -BOOT- (sorry for the emphasis) my system, it reports an error in "loading fglrx module".
Anyway, I tried re-emerging the drivers after playing a bit with the kernel, and I noticed something that seemed strange...
When the driver tries to compile the module, it finds some "problem in unidentified architecture" (or something like that) when it reaches the AGP part. I got in the kernel (1.2.7 for amd64) and found the option for AGP. I cannot enable or disable this, for it has three dashes instead of a blank space - is it taken for granted? Is it disabled? Is it enabled from some other place?
I guess my problem has to do more with having an amd64 system than an ATi card. Please, if anyone has any idea, help me out!

There are no 64bit drivers from ati... so no support for you... maybe you should buy nvidia |

Yes, but I was hoping that the "32bit" ones would work...
Has anyone tried a config like mine, wirh both an athlon64 and an ATi card? |

Well it's quite simple... if you use it in 64bit mode than you won't be able to use hadware accelerated 3D with ATI cards... there's no trick or anything... you bought ATI card... it was a mistake |

Look Devas, I am kind of sick with nVidia fans using linux as a platform (no pun intended) to step uppon and bash at ATi. When I bought my card, nVidia sucked big time as far as their mid-range cards go in comparison to ATi, and the quality of ALL their models displays was sub-par. And, anyway, do you know how a reply like "you should buy an nVidia" sound?
Just like "you should try Windows. It works"...
If "it works", is it better? Think about it this way...
Best regards

I think you're missing the point he's making...
If you're using a 64bit OS... Gentoo64 bit - then you WILL NOT be able to use ATI drivers at all. Hopefully by the end of the year, there will be drivers available. Nobody is bashing ATI, although there is plenty of reason to. I have an ATI card and can't wait to be rid of it (sick of ATI and their lame attempt at driver support). |

Thanks to all for your answers. I understood, breakerfall, the problem, and I`m not bashing at him, at Linux, Gentoo or the world... The problem lies within ATi itself and I know it. It`s just that the phrase "you bought that and it was a mistake" by itself refers to the choice of the specific hardware, or that`s how I saw it at least - maybe I was mistaken and sorry if I offended anyone.
The simple reality though is that it sucks to have a new "all-powerfull" system and see your video card crawling. I don`t even have overlays for crying out loud, not just 3D acceleration! Ahh... Zits... Somebody kick ATi for me... |
