I tried to install Gentoo using the minimal 2004.2 CD. When booting on my HP NX9010 laptop the install freezes when detecting IEEE1394 devices. I looked around in the forums, but couldn't find anything about this only that there are problems with the minimal cd. So I downloaded the Universal CD but still the same problems. When detecting IEEE1394 devices the machine hangs.
Can somebody help me? This did not happen with a Knopixx CD and older Gentoo CD's didn't have these problems on this machine. I want to use the 2004.2 because of the standard WIFI and Laptop support. This I couldn't get running on older Gentoo versions. I now run Suse 9.1 and everything is working fine, but I like Gentoo more so if you can help me I can delete the Suse part again |

When I have problems like this, I try the following:
1. Try to disable USB in the BIOS (temporary).
2. Toggle various options in the BIOS related to USB, IRQs, APCI, etc.
3. Boot a different kernel (by pressing F1 at the Live CD boot prompt).
4. Boot without various options (by pressing F2 at the Live CD boot prompt).
But first, try this at the Live CD boot prompt:
I've seen this fix various issues. Good luck. _________________ While your waiting for your post to be answered, please help with unanswered posts. |

Wow, I sorry, but I'm fresh out. Generally one of the above steps will produce some type of results. Hopefully someone can step up and assist. Good luck. _________________ While your waiting for your post to be answered, please help with unanswered posts. |

I've installed the latest 2004.3r1 with no problems. I also had loads of problems with IEEE1394 with Redhat 8 when I first had my laptop. But it was case of using an alternative kernel that didn't have 1394 support.

Hi,
i had those problems whith many a couple of distros. Just pass these options to the linux kernel (at the boot prompt) :
boot : linux noauto nofirewire acpi=off
i also had problems with acpi support, that's why i added acpi=off to the list of options.
Hope this helps.
