it's really not too bad.

the hard part is getting everything ready to use qingy, which for normal, modern hardware is not very hard at all.

follow the The Gentoo Framebuffer, Bootsplash & Grubsplash How-To
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=49036

All you need from that is the frambuffer working.

Then just
Code:
# su -
# nano -w /etc/inittab

and edit the section
Code:
# TERMINALS
c1:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty1 linux
c2:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty2 linux
c3:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty3 linux
c4:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty4 linux
c5:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty5 linux
c6:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty6 linux

to
Code:
# TERMINALS
c1:12345:respawn:/sbin/qingy tty1
c2:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty2 linux
c3:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty3 linux
c4:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty4 linux
c5:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty5 linux
c6:12345:respawn:/sbin/agetty 38400 tty6 linux

and feel free to edit as many of the ttys as you want, but always leave at least one with getty. for more info on that part, visit the documentation site at the qingy webpage: http://qingy.sourceforge.net/manual.php

CAUTION
Gentoo-sources more recent than 2.6.5-r1 are pretty much broken with qingy. The best option is not using gentoo sources and finding alternate kernel-sources that are either not so heavily patched or are known working with qingy until it all gets sorted out.

Have fun, though, I got it working very easily, and you'll learn something with the framebuffer stuff, it can be very pretty.

oh shit i noticed you're on i810 hardware, to get the framebuffer working with that i was not able to use the standard set up.

this is taken from the website i used to get my inspiron set up
Quote:
A kernel framebuffer driver (for hi-res graphical consoles) is available. As with X, the dependency on AGP support complicates things, and if you want to use the framebuffer driver and X at the same time there are more hoops to jump through.

The framebuffer driver, i810fb, is included in 2.6 kernels, and is available as a patch to the 2.4 kernel at http://i810fb.sourceforge.net. There is also a HOWTO on that site which explains the driver very well, which you should read -- setting it up can be complicated.

A few pointers of my own:

* You almost certainly want the i810fb-lite driver.
* If you have problems with X server crashes when switching virtual consoles, disable the framebuffer acceleration. The unaccelerated console is still pretty fast. (The crashes are not i810fb's fault. But you knew that, because you read the HOWTO.)
* Build i810fb and its dependenences into the kernel rather than as modules; it's simpler. Since i810fb depends on AGP support, this means you'll need to configure AGP as built-in before you'll be able to select i810fb as built-in.
* Enable the VESA GTF option -- it's more reliable, and easier to come up with a valid configuration.

I use this on the (2.6) kernel command line to start i810fb at 1024x768 (without the linebreak):

video=i810fb:vram:4,xres:1024,yres:768,bpp:16,hsync1:30,
hsync2:54,vsync1:50,vsync2:60,hwcur,voffset:32,mtrr

i didn't set up the pretty graphics and i just used that straight as is. but you don't need the pretty pictures to get qingy to work, just the raw framebuffer will support what you want. You may want to check out Intel(R) 810 and 815 Framebuffer Driver site
http://i810fb.sourceforge.net/

for more advanced options.

i finally got qingy working with gentoo-dev-source 2.6.8 but i can only log on to xfce4 from it. it doesnt show fluxbox(thats what i use everyday).

in /etc/qingy/setttings
x sessions file to use is /etc/X11/gdm/Session which contain two files, Xfce4 and kahakai.desktop Xfce4 has no extension like .desktop. i can not log into kahakai, it goes back to qingy login screen.

i tried to change x session file to /usr/share/xsessions which has fluxbox.desktop, kahakai.desktop, xfce4.desktop, and gnome.desktop

my gdm worked fine with all .desktop files in /usr/share/xsessions.
now, how can i make qingy work with fluxbox and other wm? i want to get rid of gdm asap.

make sure you're up to the latest version of qingy (0.5.1) as of 18.8.2004 and then harrass the developer by searching for the "awesome app qingy" discussion. I've never had your problem, so sorry, I can't help you there.

at least you have the framebuffer working!

I set my x_sessions to "/etc/X11/Sessions", which seems to have a few more. There's just simple scripts, so you can modify the ones in there or add more to suit your needs.

Use 0.5.2!
0.5.1 is a horrible abort of mine...
