I have a friend that needs a computer to do some wordprocessing. I was thinking about throwing together some junk that I have lying around.
Is it possible to install Gentoo on a system with only 540 mb of harddrive space and 128 mb ram?
Do I have enough space on the hd for xfree, blackbox and abiword?
How large should I make the swap partition? 2 x ram seems to large to me |

Posting without thinking again
Mabey the moderators should just create a script that kills any post I make between 2 and 6 am
I can of course build the system on a diffrent machine and copy it over. |

I agree with the end of the last post. While it should be enough for x and a few other things (I'd put in all in one partition, tiny swap), you won't be able to build gentoo on that drive, it's too small. You should be able to get a 2 gig for a few bucks at a second hand computer store and that should be plenty. _________________ -- Michael

For what it's worth, that still seems a bit small.
Of course you don't need to make swap that big. If all you are installing is X, blackbox, and abi, then you may never run out of your 128MB ram at all! I might still put on 64MB swap, just in case.
However, there's not much room left over for other stuff. He's probably not going to get a portage tree, since that takes up a lot of space (he won't have room to download/compile anyway!) and he will probably miss out on a number of other useful apps.
Anyway, I might think twice about it. If you do this, please write back and tell us how it works out! |
