|

Greetings!
I'm trying to install Gentoo for the first time after using RedHat9 on my server for a long time.
The server is primarily a fileserver and a webserver. In time it will probably become a mailserver as well.
I don't run xwindows of any kind.
I'm a bit uncertain about what USE-flags to set, and have come up with this so far:
USE="-alsa -arts -gnome -gtk -icq -kde -mozilla -opengl -oss -oggvorbis -pcmcia -qta -quicktime -videos -voodoo3 -xine -xinerama -xmms -xv -xvid -yahoo -X apache apache2 ftp imap mysql mysqli samba spl ssl tokenizer x86
Is there more I should add to maximize system performance?
Best regards,

The useflags you choosed are fine, but you dont need the x86 flag (as far as i know)
you could have a look at the app called "ufed" (emerge ufed) if you want to see what other useflags you can use. _________________ Encrypt, lock up everything and duct tape the rest |

I would suggest using ufed (a command line USE flag editor gotten by 'emerge ufed') and stepping through each and every flag, selecting it if it's appropriate. Ufed provides a description of every flag, and sometimes the description is even useful.
1. emerge ufed
2. type 'ufed'
3. evaluate each flag
What flags you set and what you don't depends on what hardware you have, what services you'll be running, and what what features you want or don't want available, all of which differs significantly from what everyone else here has. |

thank you very much!
I will use that, sounds like a nice way to set the flags.
