|
|
I would like to do the following things, but I'm not sure how to do it. Right now, my computer boots up and gives me a text-based login after entering run-level 3.
I would like to make my computer enter run-level 5 by default and use GDM as it's graphical login. I already have GDM emerged and set as default. However, when I type init 5 at the console, nothing changes. What do I have to do to:
- Make init 5 the default
- Make init 5 run GDM

I did the following:
- Change the default runlevel in /etc/inittab from 3 to 5
- $ rc-update add xdm default
Good
- Init goes to runlevel 5 instead of 3
- GDM now starts when I boot up
Bad
- When I select 'Shut Down Computer' or 'Restart' from the Gnome logout menu, init brings down eth0 and some other scrips (I didn't see it happen, but I know it did because I could no longer visit slashdot), but instead of shutting down, it just brings GDM right back up again. Why?
- (Inside Gnome / runlevel 5) Typing 'init 4', 'init 3' or 'init 2' as root does nothing. Typing 'init 1' makes the term scroll way down, and proceeds to hard-lock the computer with a blank screen. I want to be able to type 'init 3' and bring it back into text mode.

I do not think it is necessary to change the inittab runlevel to 5. Try changing that back to it's default and see if that fixes something... |

You see, this is what I want though. I want it use runlevel 5 for graphical mode, and runlevel 3 for multi-user text mode, with a default of 5. What I have right now seems to be a partially functional run-level 5 graphical mode and no runlevel 3 mode. |
