Ok, in a bid to transfer my last system onto gentoo I have a new prob.
My machine will just be a file server. I go through everything like normal but when I get to "lilo", this is what happens.
livecd / # lilo
Warning: '/proc/partitions' does not match '/dev' directory structure.
Name change: '/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/disc' -> '/dev/sda'
The kernel was compiled with DEVFS_FS, but 'devfs=mount' was omitted
as a kernel command-line boot parameter; hence, the '/dev' directory
structure does not reflect DEVFS_FS device names.
Added gentoo *
I have a promise SATA card with a 150g drive. It is /dev/sda, BUT, when I boot it says:
>>Determining root device...
>> Block device /dev/sda3 is not a valid root device...
>> The root block device is unspecified or not detected.
please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell...
boot()::
Here is my lilo:
boot=/dev/sda
prompt
timeout=70
default=gentoo
image=/boot/kernel-2.6.8-gentoo-r1
label=gentoo
read-only
root=/dev/ram0
append="init=/linuxrc ramdisk=8192 real_root=/dev/sda3"
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.6.8-gentoo-r1
This of course has brought everything to a grinding halt.
Thanks so much for your help. _________________ DannyBoy |

Adding the "devfs=mount" to the kernel command line might help.
Also, out of curiosity, why are you using lilo?

I have never used grub. What would the advantage be? I am always willing to try new things. that is why I discovered and fell in love with Gentoo..

Grub's just better, really. It can boot a lot more things, and you don't have to run a program every time you change something...I'd suggest switching to grub, (the gentoo install documentation provides a good howto) and then seeing if that helps.
