I have no idea where to start with this problem I have. When I startx I just get a blank screen with a small ~0.5mm bar at the bottom of a purpleish shade of mess down the bottom. The computer hangs after this. I do not know what caused this, when running an emerge -uD world overnight my computer had crashed when I came to check on it in the morning, and after a hard reboot xfree would not start.
Has anyone come across this before, any ideas what should I do to fix this?

Hi,
have a look at /var/log/Xorg.0.log. Maybe that gives you a hint.
And, did you continue the emerge process? |

Did you finish the emerge -uD world after your hard reboot ? There are probably some broken packages. If you did and it still doesn't work, try

I ran emerge -av xfree and it seems to be compiling something now (my money is on that it is compiling xfree )
what does that command do? --ask --verbose ???
is it recompiling it or does that mean that it was not compiled completely in the first place?

Hi.
maybe try to replace the Driver identifier in you xorg.conf from nvidia to nv.
And, did you enable glx or dri?
Although there is only one warning that you have only one monitor selected, everything else looks fine. |

You could try to disable AGPx8 in bios (make it agpx4), i have had similar problems and this have solved my problem |

ok, so I decided that it could possibly be xfree that was the problem. So I emerge -C xfree and then emerge xorg-x11 to see if that worked.
I do not know anything about xorg, so I am assuming that it uses the same commands etc. as xfree. Upon running startx I get the same purpleish haze of colours at the bottom.
In my bios I can not change AGP8 to AGP4, it says something about it locking an AGP8x device so you can't change it.
CDs such as Knoppix still work, so I am assuming the bios is not the problem. Buy hey what do I know :S |
