I didn't find any other postings which fixed the problem I was seeing trying to get my Epson Perfection 1260 USB scanner up and running using the Epson iscan tool (see bugzilla for the ebuild). On gentoo-sources-2.4.26, I was getting errors like

Code:

usb_control/bulk_msg: timeout
scanner.c: write_scanner: NAK received.

in /var/log/messages when I executed iscan. The actual problem was that iscan was getting mixed up by the plustek module still being present in /etc/sane.d/dll.conf .

Moral of the story: when using iscan and getting strange USB errors, make sure you comment out espon and plustek (depends on which Epson scanner you have) from dll.conf.
