hey
first, i have to say that my english isnt very well :), but i hope you'll understand me coz im only a 15 years old ger. boy and dont know so much about linux. i've installed gentoo the last days. now it works fine for me, BUT theres one problem: i cant get a connection through my realtek (8139too) network card. first, before the first emerge, i had a connection per "adsl-start". now, everytime when i use adsl-start, i'll get a timed out error. well, eth0 is hopefully well configured (kernel compilled with realtek support -> UP RUNNING). so, anyone know a good solution for my problem? i would be very thxful :)

Did you change any adsl configuration? Possibly your username/password is incorrect. Are you sure your DSL modem is working?

I just ran through a nightmare with my DSL modem getting fried.

are you using rp-pppoe ? if so, set it to debug mode.
I had this on my machine some time ago, I set the debug mode and realized I havent created the /dec/ppp* devices :)

Installing -> Networking & Security. Past initial install, judging from comments in the first post implying self-compiled kernel.

Do you see lights flashing on your ADSL modem when you try to connect ?

If they are not flashing, check if you have the proper interface in your config file ( the default is eth1 ) and make sure that interface is up. What do you have ,related to ppp, enable in your kernel ?

Make sure /etc/ppp/options is empty. To start tour connection in debug mode type "DEBUG=1 adsl-start" but make sure you are not browsing whit debug enable cause you will fil up you HD pretty fast :-).

in the con.f/net file i only configured eth0. why do you mean eth1 is default?

You might want to read some documentation, try www.roaringpenguin.com

rp-pppoe apparently can't handle network cards with IP's, so you must disable IP addressing on that card (or purchase another card, if you connected the modem to a hub or switch)

I have sucesfully had ADSL work with this exact configuration, although it was an Australian Telco.

The 8139too cards are standard issue for adsl in australia, so I can assure you they work.

Not true at all. My router has two cards in it. eth0 is assigned 172.16.31.1. eth1 is assigned 172.16.30.1. rp-pppoe binds eth0 to ppp0 just fine. So eth1 is my internal LAN interface, and eth0 is the external interface to ppp0.
