I'm looking for a driving simulator.. not a *racing* game as such - but something which simulates driving a vehicle, with realistic gear changes and clutch control etc. Has anybody seen anything like this?

Not for linux unfortunately. The best you will find are Papyrus sims like GPL or NR2003 and the EA F1 titles all of which have several mods, Live for Speed a budget title or netKar which is free.

The future hope for a linux sim is Motorsport, which has only recently started development.

I believe that both Racer and Torcs can be set up to behave in the way in which you describe.

It's a game, not a simulator. Go try GPL and you will see the difference

Im interested in this because i'm looking for something to aid learner drivers. Would it be possible to take a game like Racer [http://www.racer.nl] and model a street track, add street car models etc, and configure a racing wheel so that you have full analog clutch and gas pedals, and have a relatively accurate simulation ? :?

Well, racer does excel with its fully analog clutch (once you configure it right). There are many street cars available for racer, and it comes with utilities to create tracks and cars.
By the way, has anyone got any racer-bin car to behave like it has a diesel engine - that is, get it to start off by just gently releasing the clutch, no gas? I'm guessing that this would be important for driving students, as most driving teachers have diesel-engine cars (in Israel, anyway)

The best simulator that I know is, no doubt, RBR .... I play it with cedega-cvs ( http://transgaming.org/gamesdb/games/view.mhtml?game_id=3479 )

I heard it's not working with gcc-4.1.X...

ebuild! At last! Thanks a lot! (it's not a big deal to run the binary, but I like Gentoo way!) {-:

I think it's not just diesel engine that starts off by releasing the clutch, no gas. At least with manual gears. (-:

And maybe someone knows a game like Tokyo Bus Guide (from DreamCast)?! It's a "bus driver" simulator.
I've never seen such game on PC and TBG was GREAT fun! (-:
