yes, the floppy will work with and in xp pro, or at least it should. Once u make it, u do not have to mount it, simply make your bios boot from floppy once u have run that little program and u should be put into dos so u can type fdisk /mbr good luck. |

sinisterdomestik,
You are trying to read a CD-ROM filesystem from a floppy. You may well be able to do that on linux but its not very useful for most floppies.
Change the iso9660 to vfat.
You did build the vfat stuff with your kerenel ? _________________ Regards,

u dont need to type cp bootme.exe /mnt/floppy. That will copy the .exe onto the floppy. That is NOT what we want. Instead, get to a windows computer and RUN the .exe w/ the floppy in the drive (in WINDOWS mode). Hope that clears some stuff up. Good luck! |

First, is your /boot is on /dev/hdb1? If not, it looks like grub doesnt wanna work in your mbr. If u have a cd burner i can give u instructions on how to make an .iso that will boot w/ grub. (vs. isolinux, although if u want isolinux instead i can do that too) Then untill we can work out a better solution, u can just pop the cd in and boot that way. (it would be preferable if u have some cd-rws, but a cdr should work). |

yeah, /boot is /dev/hdb1, root is /dev/hdb3, and windows is /dev/hda1. i have a 10 gig "transfer" drive that is /dev/hda5. the cd burnin bit sounds like a good idea cept gentoo doesnt like my cdrecord, but thats a different story. ill TRY savin my windows stuff and re-installin i suppose :'(
even if i re-install, how will that fix the mbr?? does that make a "new" mbr?? _________________ Thou shalt NEVER speak of removing thine Linux |

If I'm not mistaken this is the correct way to put on the MBR.
Code: | Code listing 23.2: GRUB on the MBR
grub> root (hd0,0) // Your boot partition < where /boot is >
grub> setup (hd0) // Where the boot record is installed, here, it is the MBR
|
That is from the old install guide. Sorry, I like the old way better.
I think you will need to change where root for grub is, or where your /boot partition is. They do make that confusing don't they.
Hope that helps.

If you are using grub, changing kernels is easy. I do all mine as built in, NO modules, and I can change from one kernel to another with no problems.
I do have to re-emerge nvidia-kernel, it installs as a module but that is really easy and doesn't usually give much trouble.
If you are going to use Gentoo, you have to stay up to date with kernels and all that.
Glad you got it working though.

Glad to see u have it working Like dalek said, upgrading/switching kernels is pretty easy w/ gentoo and grub. Just be sure to have a copy of either your old kernel or your old kernel's .config file so u can revert back if nessesary. I would go w/ just a copy of your old kernel, that way u can stick an option i ngrub so u can choose which one to use on-boot. I do that and it helps a bunch for upgrading kernels and adding support for stuff like udev in your comp. Cheers! |

I'm posting a couple things for you to study. Yep, those are all kernels. I use the second line in grub for testing.

I can boot any of those kernels. I trash all the ones that are not stable or have other problems. Just something for you to think about.
