Lots of people have installed Gentoo onto an exisiting Windows system, but I've never heard of anyone going the other way around....
At any rate, it shouldn't be that difficult. Assuming you have a free partition, just go ahead and run the Windows CD and install as normal. If you want to be able to copy files back and forth between Gentoo & Windows, specifiy Fat32, as write support for NTFS in Linux is still shaky (read-only support is solid though). I've never installed XP personally, but I've heard it doesn't give you the choice and forces NTFS.
After Windows is done with all its rebooting, patching, upgrading and more patching, reboot onto the Gentoo Live CD. Reinstall Grub as per the Gentoo installation manual.
That should be it..... |

you could not install windows when gentoo is already existing, because your pc only support 3 partitions!
you have to install windows first and then make with the other discspace a extended partition in which you make the boot, ... partitions! |

It is certainly possible, while I also recommend installing Windows previous to Gentoo. Just be careful and be aware the Windows typically will overwrite the MBR, so you'll have to fix this after the install. Good luck. |

Ummm, what?
PC's support 4 primary partitions. The 4th partition can be tagged as an "Extended" partition. You can then put lots and lots of smaller partitions in this one. They show up in Linux as hdx5, hdx6, etc, and they work perfectly well in Windows.

try
/tmp/ext2resize
/tmp isn't in your PATH variable so when you try to execute it it can't find ext2resize |

Th difficulty described in the guide is only when you have no free hd space available, if you have the free space you should be able to install windows on that. (Although I think win98 has to have the first parttion, winXP shouldn't have that restriction any more) |

I had to install XP a few weeks ago and if I remember correctly it does present that option. |

Ah yes, it was XP Home Edition. Don't know about the Pro version. |

Yes- XP Pro has the Fat32 option.

I have XP Pro, and it only gives me the FAT option if I make my partition small enough. (Less than 32G, I think.) I dunno if that's a FAT limitation or what, but it's definitely size-based. |

if u need to fdisk a vfat first.. windows seems to be able to handle that quite nicely same as linux. thats how i did mine. remember ur grub config cuz windows will overwrite the MBR and u'll need a cd to get into linux again.
hint: press f5 during windows install while its loading all the drivers.. u can choose a faster config setting :p |

I did the same thing recently, reinstalled xp onto my hd after i had gentoo installed. Windows complained about not enough partitions (probably because the 8meg one it leaves might count as a 5th) So, i just went into gentoo and mounted my /boot, edited grub.conf, copyed my /boot partition into the / filesystem, made sure it would reboot correctly, then deleted the /boot partition which let me install windows. Then i just reinstalled grub as ususal w/ the LiveCD chroot thing.
grub
root (hd0,3)
setup (hd0)
quit
PS. make sure u enter chroot before typing "grub." |

To chroot into gentoo w/ a live cd do this:
mount /dev/hda3 /mnt/gentoo (or whatever your / partition is if it isnt /dev/hda3)
mount /dev/hda2 /mnt/gentoo/boot (or whatever your /boot partition is, if u have one)
mount -t proc none /mnt/gentoo/proc
mount any other partitions u may need if u have made them.
mounting swap is optional, use the handbook to look up how to do it. (http://gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml)
chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash
env-update
I assume u know how to reinstall grub from here, if not, just go to the handbook or post back in this forum for more help. Just remember if u copyied your /boot into the / partition, use the / partition for root (hd0,3) or wahtever. If u didn't, then continue w/ the regular /boot partition for root (hd0,3). Obviosly, (hd0,3) can be something else like (hd0,1) or something. Good luck. |
