Hello y'all

It's the second time that i've tried to install Gentoo Linux and the second time i got the same error when Gentoo boots it has the following message:
"DevFs support is not included in the Kernel" but i'm very sure i've compiled it into the kernel. please don't tell me i've got to start all over again because it's a old pentium 2 clocked at 200Mhz so it takes about a day to compile a stage 2 tarball.

Info about the kernel: Gentoo-Sources 2.4 i guess just the default ebuild from Portage.

sure you dont have to. since its a kernel issue you just have to boot the livecd again and do all steps (network, mounting, etc) until you are chrooted in your environment. hopefully you dont use genkernel so you know can easily check your kernel config and check whats wrong.
go to /usr/src and check if linux is there, if not make a symbolic link (ln -s) to your actual kernel sources that should be in that dir. know do make clean just to be sure and after that do make menuconfig to check your devfs settings ( under pseudo filesystems). check installation manual for help on this.
after that do a make install (dont forget to mount /boot) and reboot without the livecd.

peace

go to /usr/src/linux
do make menuconfig
then File systems ---> Pseudo filesystems --->[*] /dev file system support (OBSOLETE)

sorry for possible typo's... mye keyboard is fucking with me... :/

then of course make && make modules_install
copy the new compiled kernel to your /boot and reboot

Don't forget to check the "mount automatically at boot" option as well!

Sorry guys it apears to be there was'nt that option in de menuconfig at all has that something to do with the ebuild i downloaded from portage well it all doesn't matter now in anger of things not working out completly how i wanted it to be i installed mandrake which now runs fine as a server for samba and proftp. Thx anyway!

[offtopic]I still think Gentoo is a great distro the installation is only a bit old fashion you guys should consider using anaconda or some other installer then Gentoo maybe would be a big succes. P.S. I still think the Gentoo forum is the best support forum of all Linux Disto's :P [/offtopic]

If it's kernel 2.4, you must select "Prompt for experimental drivers". Then you will find it under "File systems".

And please configure your keyboard to accept punctuation (.,!? etc)

FF,

Well, part of the point of Gentoo is that it's so flexible and powerful that an installer like anaconda wouldn't be appropriate. There are other distros which are in some sense easier to set up -- Mandrake, Debian, Suse et al. -- bet they don't address the things Gentoo is designed for.

I have Gentoo installations on machines from my nice powerful desktop running KDE 3.3 to crappy old machines that are literally just log servers, and each machine is easy to keep up to date and secure. I can use it in fairly exotic environments (PXE boot, machines without graphics cards/keyboards, etc.) without problems.

So the install process is the way it is and will remain so :-)

Good point, but to do that you've got to know a lot about the internals of linux/gentoo i've come to the decision to first get more experienced using another distro and maybe if i need something more powerfull/configuratable i'll come back to the Gentoo project and i'll closely monitor the progress of this distro it is still the most interesting filosophy of free choise :)

Again thx for those who responded it's been a great help to me.
