Hi,
I've got this spanned volume made with LVM1 (using a 2.4 kernel)...
Will DM/LVM2 detect it? Can I use it with a 2.6 kernel?
Please mention if you have done this in practise or not...
Regards,

Yes, lvm2 is downward compatible with the lvm 1.x metadata format and works fine with 2.6's device-mapper.
But know that with kernel 2.6 the autodetection for volumes by the kernel is gone (this matters if your root patition os on a lvm volume, then you will need an initrd for the detection and activation). It's done now with userspace tools only, i.e. vgscan; vgchange -ay
Forgot to mention: I have several old volumes in 1.x metadata format running though lvm2. I use lvm2 since the 2.5.6x kernels were released. I never had an lvm related problem, but I use lvm features like resizing etc. very seldom.
BTW evms2 is also compatible with the lvm 1.x format but not with newer lvm2 volumes (but support is planned). |
