Code:
grub> root (hd1,0)  (2nd hdd 1st partition, correct?)
grub> setup (hd0)   (install grub in the mbr)
grub> quit          (that should be obvious)

ok? So for you it should be
Code:
grub> root (hd1,0)
grub> setup (hd0)
grub> quit

Then add the stuff to grub.conf

Cokehabit ^^^ Yes, this worked. Kind of....

I now got the grub splash screen.

I can now boot into XP (using (hd0,1)) but not gentoo....

(please bear in mind that all these error messages were written by hand, so mistakes are bound to be there)

I messed about with "e" and "b" in grub for the gentoo boot; trial and error really:

Using root (hd1,0) for gentoo boots up the initial loading screen (with tux in the top right corner) All the kernel modules load
Code:

>>Loading modules........
stuff
stuff
etc
etc

Then
Code:

>>Mounting filesystems
Started device mangement daeomon v1.3.25 for /dev
>>Determining root device
>>The root block device is unspecified or not detected
Please specify a device to boot, or "shell" for a shell
boot () ::

So, i though i would try hd(1,3)
This did not even start the proper booting like ^^ did, and gave this error:
Code:

   Booting `Gentoo Linux 2.6.7`
root (hd1,3)
Filesystem typw ext2fs, partion type 0x83
kernel /kernel-2.6.7-gentoo-r5 root=/dev/ram0 init =/linuxrc real_root/dev/hdd4 vga=759
Error 15 : File not found
Press any key to continue _

Apologies for any spelling/syntax mistakes, hope this makes (some) sense.

Im now in XP so any possible soultions could take a while for em to try.

BIG thanks for helping me here guys, i hate someone else doing all the work for me, but im well outta my depth here.

Thanks again.

kernel /kernel-2.6.7-gentoo-r5 root=/dev/ram0 init =/linuxrc real_root/dev/hdd4 vga=759

maybe a typo from u but :

real_root/dev/hdd4 should be :
real_root=/dev/hdd4
