I used Gnome for a while, but switched long time ago to Enlightenment.

I like its graphical impact, and its extreme flexibility when it comes to customize the desktop to your needs.

;)
First it's Gnome or Kde, now it's the others, what's next, xfree vs. xorg? :) Just kidding... we know xorg is the way to go.

I see you are an XP user. It would probably be easiest to cut your teeth with KDE and then maybe try out XFCE4, or if you need a gui quick get XFCE4 going first but I'm not sure how much faster that would be with the dependencies. I guess if you're installing from a CD it doesn't really matter much using the binaries.

I liked XFCE4 when I used it but id didn't do xinerama very good so I didn't stick with it and I really don't have a need for a minimal DE.

Most people will say Enlightenment is best for graphics.
I prefer Fluxbox myself.

But as for an alternetive to KDE & Gnome it depends if you mean a fully blown desktop environment. If yes then i guess xfce4 is the best alternetive.

If you just want a window manager then there are many to choose from - FVWM, fluxbox, blackbox, pekwm, evilwm, openbox to name but a few.

Enlightenment is my prefered window manager.... nothing can touch it's flexibility or it's themability (if that's even a word).

Gratuitous screenshots here and here and finally..... here

(EDIT) Also one here

http://ede.sf.net for light desktop.

If you want eye-candy: KDE + SuperKaramba can do magic.

I suppose that Xfce4 would be your next best choice. I say that it's about as easy as GNOME/KDE with less bloat.

SuperKaramba is, in simple terms, a tool that allows you to easily create interactive eye-candy on your KDE desktop. Currently, only linux is officially supported.

Code:
emerge -pvu superkaramba

Don't forget ROX. ;)

Here's a screenshot of it on my desktop. I think it looks nice, and if you really like it there are a number of apps designed for it which are also quite nice as well. (But then, I think AppDirs are the best thing for the Free desktop since X11, so I may be biased)
