PostPosted: Sat Aug 28, 2004 6:24 pm    Post subject: Nvidia Dual Monitor w/ TV cloneing 2nd monitor, possible? Reply with quote

I have two monitors running at 3200x1200 (1600x1200 each) . I also have the my home theater hooked up also. I can get the TV to work with twinview when it is just that and the first display, but that requires me to restart my xserver :(
EDIT: I require 2 monitors + a TV

I figure there maybe 3 ways to do this, but can't find any info on them so prehaps someone can help me ouot.
- Get the TV to clone the second display?
EDIT: nv-tv-out may do this, thanks hds, I'll see later this week ~9-05
- Redirect all video overlays to the TV?
EDIT: xv overlays all go to 0:0
- Have a metamode that has the TV in it but not the secound display (so I don't have to restart X)?
EDIT: nv errors metamodes w/ 2+ devices "LCD:1600x1200, CRT:1600x1200+0+1200; LCD:800x600,TV:800x600"

Anybody got any ideas?

Here is my xorg.conf, which will get you TwinView on your NVIDIA card with the TV being located virtually to the right of your monitor, ie. you can drag apps off the right side of your monitor and they'll appear on your TV. I find this personally to be very much better than cloning the monitor - however, if you really want to do that then you can just change the TwinView display mode to "Clone" instead of "RightOf". My TV does 1024x768, yours might not so if it doesn't show a picture you might want to change the TV modes from 1024x768 to 800x600.

You may want to read the docs in /usr/share/docs/nvidia-glx, this is all entailed in there.

Valheru: Thanks but I already have twinview enabled and working like that

hds: Thanks you, nvtv sounds like exactly what I am looking for, hopefully I will find some documation some where. BTW, I had a cheap (99¢ cheap) s-video cable that would only show b/w, try swaping w/ a known good one, maybe you'll get color.

Afaik, all Nvidia Cards have only 2 ram - dac's.
The only way to get this working might be an additional PCI VGA card, and a Xinerama X - Server layout.
But the drawback is that you will loose dri with Xinerama.

(an other way might be a Matrox Parhelia card..)

xcuse me, but this is wrong. there are plenty users in here using the VIDEO-OUT fine - it does work, and the feature is called TwinView.

btw: no, its not the cable in my case, because it does work with a different TV. the TV i have does not even have a SCART. very old thing. i connected the svideo cable to a VCR and the VCR with antenna cable to the TV - i have no other choice. but the svideo signal is not converted by the VCR (i guess) though i have b/w only.
well, not importent. i hooked up an old 17" monitor to a PCI card, and voila ;)

I use TwinView too.
Here there are 2 monitors connected, similar to a Xinerama layout.

Quote:
EDIT: I require 2 monitors + a TV

But i can't attach an additional TV, since i use the TwinView setup already for my second monitor.

Here is the important part of my x-config:

Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier  "GeForce FX-5900XT"
    Driver      "nvidia"
    VideoRam    131072
    BusID       "PCI:1:0:0"
    Option      "NvAgp" "3"
    Option      "RenderAccel" "on"
    Option      "NoLogo" "true"
    Option      "TwinView"
    Option      "SecondMonitorHorizSync"     "31.5-96"
    Option      "SecondMonitorVertRefresh"   "50-160"
    Option      "MetaModes"                  "1280x1024,1280x1024; 1024x768,null; 800x600,null; 640x480,null"
    Option      "ConnectedMonitor"         "crt,crt"
EndSection

But as i've already written these nvidia cards have only two ramdac's
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAMDAC

So please enlight me... (The only way i've found to get the tv working is to switch between the x-config files..)

well, i think i completly lost the overview, because the 1st message has been edited so many times meanwhile 8O

well, if i understand this correctly now, he has 2 monitors already on one graphiccard? i still dont read what kind of nvidia he got. if this is the case i seriously dont know. you may be right that it doesnt work then.

my nvidia has one monitor output only, and one svideo.

Well... I guess an old PCI card could work...
Would you mind to post your x-config?

Btw.. Is it possible to use <startx + some option> to choose an x-config?
(since i use 2 different configs for work and TV...)

to get nvtv to work, you do not need any changes to xorg.

however, yes, i have an AGP and a PCI card, and 2 monitors connected. one monitor on each card. nvtv works additionally via the agp svideo out, and is totally independend from xorg.

relevant parts of xorg for 2 graphiccards:
