I've read your xorg.conf which seems fine. According to my log and yours, your X server seems to have stopped while attemping to detect your card. If not already done, you should check if your card is seen by your box with a lspci. If so, You should check if your insmod of your nvidia driver worked well. Have a look also to your device entry points (/dev/nvidia0 and /dev/nvidiactl)

I provide you my xorg.con and log as well to help you out checking where xorg get stuck

It's part of pciutils
Code:
emerge pciutils

By the way, did you check out your modules
Code:
lsmod | grep nvidia

waldosr,

You need to do
Code:
emerge nvidia-kernel
emerge nvidia-glx
opengl-update nvidia
modprobe nvidia
startx

If that worls, add nvidia to your /etc/modules.autoload.d/kernel-<ver>

The nvidia build process demands that /usr/src/linux be pointing to the right kerenl tree and that you be running the kernel you are building against.

So, your card is seen on the bus:
Code:
0000:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV34 [GeForce FX 5200] (rev a1)

This sounds lik a brand new one :)

As ' lsmod | grep nvidia gives me nothing', it seems that your driver has not been loaded. You should give a try to the following points:
- This will compile the nvidia driver and perform the basics (create the device entry point)
Code:
emerge nvidia-kernel

- Then, modprope your new module
Code:
modprobe nvidia

- Re-run you X server

I still get the same error as before. Any other ideas?

waldosr,

Run uname -a is that the kernel you expect to be running?
Confirm that the /usr/src/linux symlink is poited to the right place

Does lsmod output include nvidia ?

Well, 'modprobe nvidia' should have load the driver and you should be able to watch it via the lsmod utility. I would do the following:
- ALT+F2 to go on a second console and log you in as root
- under this new console
Code:
tail -f /var/log/messages

- ALT+F1 to go back to your first console and then
Code:
modprobe nvidia
lsmod

From now on, you should have your nvidia loaded
- ALT+F2 to watch if something wrong has been notified

That will be Ctrl-Alt-Fn and Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back to X, if its running.

Sounds like an interrupt issue. Could you post the results of
Code:
cat /proc/interrupts

Mines are:
Code:
           CPU0
  0:    1812888    IO-APIC-edge  timer
  1:       2272    IO-APIC-edge  i8042
  9:          0   IO-APIC-level  acpi
 12:      37434    IO-APIC-edge  i8042
 14:       3823    IO-APIC-edge  ide0
 15:      10224    IO-APIC-edge  ide1
 16:     158002   IO-APIC-level  CMI8738-MC6, nvidia
 19:     150632   IO-APIC-level  ndiswrapper
 21:      65076   IO-APIC-level  uhci_hcd, uhci_hcd, uhci_hcd, ehci_hcd
NMI:          0
LOC:    1793253
ERR:          0
MIS:          0

Meaning that only the CMI8738-MC6 (sound card) is sharing the nVidia IRQ

Is there any particular irq that I need to assign it?

waldosr,

No. I assume that your motherboard is all PCI. In which case its fully plug and play. If you have used ISA slots, you must not use any of the IRQs saved for them.
PCI /AGP can share IRQs, ISA cards cannot.

None I know of. Just take a free one based on the one provided by your former 'cat /proc/interrputs' results.

All I have is PCI, therefore the IRQ is not going to matter(the video card is agp)?

The only ISA bus your may have on this new box should be the one that is sometime used to carry sensors results (fan, voltage, ...) on some mobo (mine for example).

As NeddySeagoon has said, your mobo should have assigned the IRQs by its own. I'm kind of surprised that it did not do its job with your GPU. :?

waldosr,

When your video card is assigned an IRQ and the nvidia module is loaded, it should appear in /proc/interrupts something like this.
Code:
7:    1772928          XT-PIC  ohci_hcd, bttv0, Bt87x audio, nvidia
This shows that my nVida card shows IRQ 7 with ohci_hcd, bttv0, Bt87x and audio.
