okay last night i upgraded portage, and then ran emerge clean system

now, whenever i try to emerge something, i get:

root@catalyst portage # emerge ibm-jre
Calculating dependencies \Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/bin/emerge", line 1230, in ?
if not mydepgraph.create(mytype+" "+portage.root+" "+mykey,None,"--onlydeps" not in myopts):
File "/usr/bin/emerge", line 408, in create
mydb=open(mydbkey,"r")
IOError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: '/var/cache/edb/dep/dep-ibm-jre-1.3.1.ebuild'

this is not just with ibm-jre, with *anything*

help!!!
