ESSID won't stick

I have ndiswrapper installed and modprobed okay, but when I do iwconfig wlan0 essid NETGEAR, typing iwconfig shows an essid="", same thing happens trying to set the AP. Any ideas?

Using iwlist scan everything (AP included) shows up
