I've built a PC from old bits and pieces I had around the place and I want to put Gentoo + X on it.

I have a choice of either and old 8Mb Matrox G200 or a not quite so old Savage 2000 (32 Mb?) as a video card. I want to run KDE and do some development work. All strictly 2D 1024*768 16 bit colour.

What I am trying to figure out here is which card is going to work best with X. From my web and forum searches it seems that the Matrox is better supported but I'd like to get the advice of people who have used this hardware with X.

(btw I loved that G200 card when I first got it, I formed a deep emotional attachment to it, so if you think there will be minimal/no difference in performance then it's the G200 for sure)
