OK. It says you don't have the glx extension in your X.
Lets debug.
1) Run glxinfo and check that the provider is ATI and not Mesa.
2) Run glxgears and check that things are working.
3) look at your XF86Config and in the Section "Module" check that glx is mentioned.

Oh, and do all three even if one "fails".

No sweat. I'll get you through this.
Now. open your /etc/X11/XF86Config and look at the section that looks like this:

Quote:
Section "Module"
Load "dbe"
Load "type1"
Load "freetype"
Load "xtt"
Load "glx"
# Load "dri"
Load "extmod"
EndSection

It should look pretty much the same. You want all of these and not much else.
Depending on your card you may or might not want the dri enabled or not. In general it causes more problems than it solves.

If glx is not mentioned, then add it and reboot your comp ( Yes, not just X. We want to make sure we are allways working on a clean system )

If you allready have glx in that section, then we have a problem and you should post your entire /var/log/Xfree86.0.log

OK, so time to pull up your log. That way we can see if there is a problem.
But before that, just give this a try:
Code:
SubSection "extmod"
   Option  "omit XFree86-DGA"
EndSubSection

Add it to your Xorg.conf

Well, open it in emacs, copy the whole thing and paste it as a quote.
Or, even better if you have a homepage, upload it and link.

OK, here is your problem.
You are running an ATI card. Now, tell me, why does Xfree attempt to load nVidia drivers?
Quote:
(EE) Failed to initialize GLX extension (NVIDIA XFree86 driver not found)

Show me your complete Xorg.conf
And then tell me what drivers you are using. The built in or the binaries?
Have you run opengl-update at any time. If so, tell me about that.

Further, it is possible you will never be able to run HW-accelerated openGL on this gfx-card.
Quote:
(WW) RADEON(0): Direct rendering not yet supported on Radeon 9500/9700 and newer cards

But you should be able to run it is software and that shoudl work for most things. At least tuxracer.

maybe I am missing something, but why dont you use ati's own drivers, they dont perform that good but you at least will have some OpenGL support

Well, now I think I have a handle on your problem.
Here is my solution:
 As root, run opengl-update xfree
I think you now have a mix of xfree and nvidia opengl drivers and that just doesn't work. Reboot your comp and things should work. Slowly, but they should work.
 When you are ready ( which should be quite soon ) emerge the ati-drivers.

this is the output

opengl-update xfree
usage: opengl-update <GL implementation>

This utility switches between OpenGL implementations. Currently there
are five supported implementations, "xorg-x11" "xfree" "nvidia" "ati"
and "mtx", the implementations for X.org, XFree86, nVidia, ATi
and Matrox drivers respectively.

examples:
opengl-update xorg-x11
This will setup things to use libGL.so from X.org.

opengl-update nvidia
This will setup things to use libGL.so from the nVidia drivers.

Can I remove the Nvidia drivers?
and if so how ?

Oh, damn this change to X.org. All the names keep getting f*cked up.
Yeah, obviously you use the xorg-x11 implementation.
To get rid of the nVidia drivers you unmerge dem. But them being on your system is not a problem att all. Your library links to them are what your problem is. So update to use the xorg-x11 implemenattion. Reboot and run glxinfo.
