So here's a weird problem that I've had with two different CD/DVD drives: They will eject the disc just fine, but they suck the tray back in almost immediately! And while it's a fun game of reflexes to pull the disc from the tray in the split-second before the tray gets sucked back in, I'm a little tired of it. I'd just like the drive to leave the tray out for more than a second or so.
The drive unmounts correctly. It ejects from both the button on the drive and from the ejection control on gkrellm2. I recently replaced an old CDROM drive (which did not exhibit this behavior) with the current DVD/CDRW drive. I've tried two different DVD drives and both behaved this way. One difference between them was that the older one would start playing music CDs if it found one in the tray. The newest DVD drive doesn't do that--it's a Mad Dog Multimedia 4-in-1 drive, if that makes a difference.
Is there some difference in how DVD drives eject vs. a plain-Jane CDRW drive? Is there perhaps a HungryHungryHippo process that's querying the drive which I don't know about? I do have hdparm run on all /dev/hd* devices at bootup to make sure DMA is on and that the drives will spin down after inactivity, but I can't imagine it produces this kind of behavior, especially since the regular old CD drive didn't do it.
Thanks,
