I really need something like that in Fluxbox. Is there anything similar to this? Mind you I don't need it to have internet capabilites, I just need it to browse through files and directories.

Have you emerged kde? You can use konqueror in fluxbox. You can even configure the menu to start it into filemanager mode. I forgot the exact syntax.

or simply install epiphany web browser, have smaller dependencies or galeon

Code:

emerge epiphany

and galeon in the same way, but have large dependecies tree

u dont need all the KDE scrap, kdelibs, kdebase, qt
simply grap epiphany

or if u need only for file browsing
Code:

emerge dillo

dillo doesnt requires mozilla engine, and other libs to build
it's a simple file/html browser for X11, can be used with FluxBox, OpenBox, BlackBox, IceWM, WindowMaker - whatever you want WM :)

Geart, thanks. I've decided on Konq, beacuse I didn't like Dillo.

I'm really liking this WM...none of the bloat KDE has, it doesn't take up alot of memory, it's generally fast and extremely quick to boot up! :D

But I've one last quick question, how do you add stuff to the fluxbox menu?

you must edit the ~/fluxbox/menu file manually; it's quite simple

with menu-maker

Code:

emerge dev-python/menumaker

than make menus for FluxBox

Code:

mmaker FluxBox

Is it really quite simple for a newbie ?
I think menumaker way is better :)

Don't know if you tried it yet, but the rox-filer is pretty good alternative to kde konqueror. Has mime support, shell commands, hotkeys, and a really nice clean interface thats fast.

just emerge rox

[exec] (Konqueror) {konqueror --profile filemanager}

yep it's that easy, but I think I will check out menumaker just to see what it is all about.

It's a very simple text file, check it out. I even added a menu item to my flux menu like this:
[exec] (edit menu) {cream ~/.fluxbox/menu}

and you can edit your flux menu from your flux menu

If you use menumaker, backup the original because it will overwrite without warning or backing it up for you. It's an auto config. It tries to find the programs for you and lay them out for you. I think if you rely on this, then maybe you should stay with kde. Not a knock. It's just that fluxbox seems to be all about configuring it your way.

Code:
emerge gentoo

It's the best filemanager with flux, and ROX are a nice alternative

Short description and deps of all GUI based web browsers in Gentoo 1.5.3

1. Amaya - Amaya is a complete web browsing and authoring environment and comes equipped with a WYSIWYG style of interface. It lets users both browse and author valid Web pages, with standards including (X)HTML, native MathML, and SVG documents. It also includes a collaborative annotation application (RDF).

Amaya - depends on:

glib-1.2.10
gtk+-1.2.10
OpenMotif-2.1.30-1 and later
wxGTK-src-2.5.1 (this dependencie is not declared for Amaya in Gentoo, but is optional)

2. Dillo - Dillo Web browser is a very fast, extremely small Web browser that's completely written in C. The source and binary are less than 400 kilobytes each. It is a graphical browser built upon GTK+, and it renders a good subset of HTML, excluding frames, JavaScript, and JVM support.

Dillo - depends on:
gtk+1.2.10
glib-1.2.10
jpeg-6b
zlib-1.2.1 or later
libpng-1.2.1
openssl (optionaly)

3. Epiphany - Epiphany is a GNOME web browser based on the Mozilla rendering engine. Its goals are simplicity, standards compliance, and integration with GNOME.

Epiphany - depends on:
glib-2.4.1 or later
gtk+-2.4.xx
GConf-1.2
libxml2-2.2.6
libgnomeui-2.6.0
libglade-2.3.1
ORBit2-2.x.x
gnome-vfs-2.3.1
mozilla-1.7.2
nautilus-2.5.x is optional

4. Galeon - Galeon is a GNOME Web browser based on Gecko (the Mozilla rendering engine). It is fast, has a light interface, and is fully standards-compliant.

Galeon - depends on:
mozilla-1.7.2-r1 or later
glib-2.x.x
gtk+-2.4.0
libxml2-2.6.6
gconf-2.3.2
ORBit2-2.x.x
libbonobo-2.x.x
libbonoboui-2.1.1
libgnomeui-2.5.2
gnome-vfs-2
scrollkeeper

5. Kazehakase - Kazehakase is a Web browser which aims to provide a user interface that is truly user-friendly & fully customizable. It supports tabbed browsing, a "remote bookmark" feature (through RSS) in a menu or sidebar, a variable UI to adapt to the user's skill level, and customizable mouse gestures and key accelerators.

Kazehakase - depends on:
automake
libtool
mozilla
pango
gtk+-2.x.x
pkgconfig

6. Mozilla - Mozilla is a Web browser that is being developed by the Free Software Community with the cooperation and support of Netscape. The current Mozilla is a completely new software based on the "NGLayout" layout engine and runs on almost all current operating systems. Mozilla's user interface is written on top of NGLayout using XUL and JavaScript. The Mozilla project only develops and tests the source code for other projects / companies to use. Netscape 6 (the Web browser from Netscape) and Beonex Communicator (an open-source project to make a Mozilla for end-users) are directly based on Mozilla. Many other projects use/embed Mozilla's rendering engine (e.g., Galeon).

Mozilla - depends on:
Java (optionaly)

7. Mozilla FireFox - Firefox (formerly known as Phoenix and Firebird) is a redesign of the Mozilla browser component. It is similar to Galeon, K-Meleon, and Chimera, but it is written using the XUL user interface language and was designed to be cross-platform.

FireFox - depends on:
zlib
jpeg-6b
libmng
libpng
portage-2.0.36 or later
expat
zip
unzip
GTK2 and Java are optionaly

8. Netscape Communicator 4.8 - Netscape Communicator is the all-in-one web browser and communications suite that makes it easy to send Internet email, read newsgroups, create web pages, and browse the World Wide Web.

Netscape Communicator - depends on:
libcompat-1.0 or later

9. Netscape Navigator 4.8 - is the same like communicator, but only web browser, eg. Mozilla and Firefox

10. Opera - Opera for Linux is an alternative, lightweight, X11-based Web browser for Linux.

Opera - depends on:
fontconfig
libexif
openmotif

11. Skipstone - Skipstone is a GTK+ Web browser that embeds Mozilla through libgtkembedmoz. It aims to be a fast and simple browser with few dependencies.

Skipstone - depends on:
mozilla-1.6 or later
GTK+-2.0 or later

12. Konqueror - Part of KDE

Konqueror - depends on QT3, KDELIBS, KDEBASE

It seems nobody has mentioned xffm. Anyways, I'll do it now :)

Code:
# emerge xffm

fluxbox is king when running fluxspace with rox-filer. fluxspace lets you use the rox-panel and gives your real quick access to all your folders :-D A++ for that.

Lightweight? Hell no! Slower than Firefox (in loading time).

I think konqueror owns as web browser, although I have some difficulties to view a few pages with it. I like it especially because of its configurability, I can really choose everything what it should display in the menubars. Btw, I'm using Konqueror in Fluxbox, too :)

You've mentioned you didn't need internet browsing. Then you should really try:

emerge thunar -avt

This fm is default in xfce and really rules: gtk2 integration, really really quick, simple, full-featured, internationalized, and quite few deps. Konqueror rocks but it lacks GNUland's principle of simple tools doing great things together. thunar is the one.
