i know it's usually if the kernel image filename is wrong, but it is right nad i'm still getting it... ideas?

update: no longer get the error, but now i just get a blank screen and my keyboard lights blink after i select teh linux kernel from grub

This means kernel panic.

I would need to know more about your hardware, and how your kernel is compiled to help with this problem.

i took out the vga call in the grub.conf file and it works fine now.

This error has been solved in the grub error collection thread. Additionally, there are many threads around if you search the forums solving this issue.
