Hi all,

I'm trying to install gentoo from stage 1.
I'm getting the following errors while running bootstrap.sh:

!!! Couldn't download binutils-2.14.90.0.8.tar.bz2. Aborting.

I guess the trick is that binutils-2.14.90.0.8.tar.bz2 is not in www.kernel.org/pub/linux/devel/binutils/test but in www.kernel.org/pub/linux/devel/binutils

How may I correct this?

That's odd. But fear not - you can download it manually (links is included on the LiveCD for instance) and put it in /usr/portage/distfiles, or if you do it from the LiveCD directly (not "inside"/chrooted in the new filesystem) /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage distfiles.

Simply type exit to exit the chroot (or simply open up another console if you have set a password on the livecd) and fire up links. Download the file and put it in /mnt/gentoo/usr/portage/distfiles, chroot back into the new system and try again.

Thanks for your help .

I just realized that I have to setup a proxy server.
I added this line to /etc/profile:
Code:

export http_proxy=myproxy.mydomain.com

Now wget behaves correctly.
May be a line dealing with proxy issues should be added to the Handbook?

I was wondering if anybody else had had the same problem.

However, I don't have a proxy server. I tried changing my gentoo_mirrors setting in make.conf to the gentoo.asia server but it didn't help at all.

I can emerge all parts of the bootstrap script except for binutils, in which case I get the same "Connection refused" error and I can't explain why. I can emerge other packages fine.

I've started the stage 1 install from scratch about 9 times now and I'm making progress extremely slowly but until I emerge binutils I can't get any further this time. I'm sorely tempted to throw away the bootstrap script and just install a stage 2 pentium-3 tarball.

Any help out there with this error?

Awesome. After downloading it how do I compile it (or where do I untar it)?

You don't untar it. What bootstrap (and emerge for that matter) does is it looks in /usr/portage/distfiles for the file it's trying to use. If it exists, then it uses that file. If it doesn't then it tries to download it.

Then it unpacks and installs it for you.

The file(s) exist in /usr/portage/distfiles (binutils-2.14.90.0.8-patches-1.3, binutils-2.15-uclibc-patches-1.0, binutils-2.15.92.0.2-patches-1.2 and binutils-2.15.92.0.2) but emerge isn't looking for it there.

Yes, make.conf points portage there...
Code:
PORTDIR=/usr/portage
DISTDIR=${PORTDIR}/distfiles

I'm going nuts trying to figure this out. I'm going to try the whole process again with the 2004.3 install and see if that works better. If not I'll just stick with a stage 2 install.

Am I missing something or didn't your first post indicate it couldn't download binutils-2.14.90.0.8.tar.bz2 and now you've got a file called binutils-2.15.92.0.2? Those are different!

Also, if portage is looking for a *.tar.bz2 file and you downloaded it as a *.tar.gz file it will still try to do the download. I messed that up oncce and was confused for a moment.

I'm getting some of the same issues here...except, during bootstrap, I appear stuck on protector-3.3.2-2.tar.gz

Understand the work around...but my question is...why the problem to begin with? I get the issue with Host not found...and authentication failures...etc. I've never had this kind of issue in the past...anyone got any ideas?

I've also tried to bootstrap.sh -f....but I get the same problem...

***edit***

I finally got this to download...but I had to get into make.conf and comment out the mirror select option...so gentoo would use the "default"...whatever...it's downloading now...but stilll....why even bother with the mirrorselect in the first place if it's just going to have a problem later? Anyone else having this problem? and understand the WHY?

FFS - even the stage 2 install borked when I was emerging the system, claiming that Perl 5 or greater needed to be installed first. Emerging libperl gave compile errors. I've tried everything by the book and used a lot of the things people have suggested on this board (see ali3nx's installation guide thread under Tips and Tricks) so why is there still a problem? Either mirrors won't give me a file or make won't compile it.

*edit* So far a straight-up stage 3 install is working. Kernel compiled, a niggle installing the video card driver (seeing how that turns out now)...more updates to come
