Ive tried using gensplash as instructed in this link :
http://dev.gentoo.org/~spock/projects/gensplash/gensplash-in-5-easy-steps.php

now, not only does it not work, but after unmerging splashutils my ethernet card doesnt get detected!! i was told to modify the /etc/conf.d/net file and i did so but still doesnt work! i get an error saying (at boot) :

Code:
*Bringing eth0 up...
eth0 192.168.0.2
SIOCSIFADDR:No such device
eth0: unknown interface: No such device
SIOCSIFADDR:No such device
eth0: unknown interface: No such device
SIOCSIFADDR:No such device
*Setting default gateway (192.168.0.1)
SIOCSIFADDR:No such device

What do i do?!!! this is so frustrating!

Dont know where to begin with your trouble (looks like your nic is not being recognized), but just FYI, I used the exact same page and gensplash works fine for me (2.4.26-r9)

Maybe you overwrote /etc/conf.d/net in an etc-update
Maybe you forgot to compile/rebuild your network driver module when you rebuilt your kernel

i think the file was over-written. but i corrected it since, but still i get that error and i havent rebuilt the kernel so that cant be it. i will recompile it tho just to check

edit : is there any way to undo that etc-update?

eth0 fucked upp because when you emerge splashutils a new baselayout will be installed. Just reconfigure /etc/conf.d/net etc. Do the configuring as when you first installed gentoo.
