hello all,
i have figured out how to play windows media files in linux. i can get totem to play them.
the problem i am having is telling my browsers that totem can do that. when i click on the particular windows media player, it tells me that i need a plugin to play application/x-mplayer2 stuff. so, i added the line
application/x-mplayer2; /usr/bin/totem %s
to my /etc/mailcap and i am still told that i need the appropriate plugin.
any suggestions?

What browser are you using? I use .mailcap for mutt (mail client) but firefox (web browser) uses it's own mimeTypes.rdf file afaik. _________________ The free market gave me gonorrhea. |

hello,
well, it appears that i found something that is SUPPOSED to work.
i normally use galeon, but usually if i set these things in mozilla it should work, but it isn't.
so, here is what i did. opened mozilla. then went to Edit -> Preferences -> Helper Applications. i made a new type, application/x-mplayer2 and told it to use totem. but, alas, it when i go to the page it still says that i need a plugin. perhaps the page is telling me the wrong plugin. i am trying to view
http://www.cbc.ca/listen/index.html#
the windows media at the bottom right of the page.

hello,
this is very frustrating. i don't know why it should be so hard to tell mozillat to launch a program when you get a certain mimetype!!!
it really shouldn't be this difficult. i tried using plugger to no avail. i also tried to use the plugger from the fedora rpms (i extracted the files and installed them manually, but that didn't work). i don't want to do anything fancy (i don't need some sort of embedded in mozilla totem thing) i just want it to launch totem.
argh.
