I've finally emerged Gnome and Xorg, but after running Xorg -configure, i get an error:

(EE) R128(0): Cannot read V_BIOS (5)

What could it be, and how can i fix it?

I had the same with my TiBook G4/400. Apparently Xorg -configure likes to read info from the BIOS, which you don't have. Pick a working X.conf file adapted for your machine from someone on the list, or google around. Put that in and you're ready to go.

I've taken the config from a 700Mhz ibook

But i think the 700mhz has a radeon card, and that i've got a rage card - so prehaps i'll only need to change something in the kernel...(took the config to that too)

you have the same video card as mine in the TiBook G4/400 you might take the section out of here:

http://www.rockhopper.dk/linux/configs/XF86Config-4.titanium

Section "Device"
Option "DMAForXv" "True"
Option "PanelWidth" "1152"
Option "PanelHeight" "768"
Identifier "Card0"
Option "UseFBDev" "True"
# Option "AGPMode" "2" # makes XFree run slow after sleep
Driver "ati"
VendorName "ATI Technologies Inc"
BoardName "Rage Mobility M3 AGP 2x"
BusID "PCI:0:16:0"
EndSection

Take 1024x768 in 24bit mode for your computer
