Anyone else seeing this? AbiWord starts fine, but when I close it, it segfaults.

I'm using '-O2 -pipe -march=pentium4 -mcpu=pentium4' for all compiles since my initial install of gentoo 1.4 rc1.

Yes, that problem has been around on my desktop system for a long time... I've basically stopped worrying about it. There may be a solution out there, but I'm not aware of it.

Same here, using abiword 1.04_pre1. I like this word processor, but I have to use a WP frequently on my laptop (in class, opening and closing files), so opening it every time and seeing the splash screen, having to click ok because it can't load the english dictionary (I have aspell installed), and then having it crash upon exit is really annoying me.

I've emerged and unmerged like crazy, doesn't help; must be a conflict with one of the ebuild packages or something I've got on my system, because it doesn't do this nonsense on another gentoo ssytem I have, or an older mandrake box.

Anyway, the crashing on exit does suck, because you can't save preferences (such as turning off the splash screen). Argh.. Wish I could get abiword 1.1x running from cvs... always dies complaining about libwv... oh well..

I had similar problems until I reemerged abiword like this:

$ USE="-gnome" emerge abiword-1.0.2-r1.ebuild

Apparently, some of the gnome related functionality in Abiword is broken.

Hmm. I'm running gnome. Isn't gnome support a good thing?

By the way, this crashing problem doesn't exist (for me) in the newest Abiword, 1.1.3 or CVS.

Both can be had (and in their "GTK2 glory") in ebuilds in the following thread:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=27034&start=50&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=
I've never noticed how nice a word processor can look, but after comparing the GTK2 abiword to MS Word... woo... Abiword is gorgeous. Lots of bugs, but nice on the eyes!!

You can allways try openoffice and see if you like that. If you have lotsa free time you can compile it yourself (emerge openoffice), else, install the precompiled version (emerge openoffice-bin). I compiled it myself yesterday, took 8 hours. Against the advice of the ebuild I compiled it with the Sun JDK and it works like a charm.

Ow yes, to stay on topic: The reason I installed OOo is that Abiword segfaults on me too. I can live with the segfault on quit, but not being able to print is another thing ;-)

Yes, aspell-en was a package I was missing. Got that fixed awhile back, but for future reference, if you emerge aspell with other packages and don't see their little warning, "emerge an aspell-** pack," then you'll want to go ahead and do that (emerge -s aspell)
