|
|
I've just installed Gentoo on my computer, and its set up on my first harddrive, (hda) or (hd0), Windows XP is set up on a diffrent harddrive altogether, its (hdb) or (hd1).... I've got my grub root to boot this way
title=Windows XP
root=(hd1,0)
chainloader +1
And whenever I choose the Windows XP its me the following error
title=Windows XP
root=(hd1,0)
chainloader +1
Unknown file system partition is on 0x7
then it has giving me a bunch of ASCII Characters
Any ideas on how to fix this?? and get it to work??? Is it capable of reading the NTFS file system?
I'll appreicate it if I could some advice here
Thanks |

It is capable of reading NTFS
Maybe you made a mistake installing grub by doing something like setup (hd1,1) (don't do that!!!)
try removing your hda harddrive to see if windows boot by itself. |

I've done that heh actually I've got gentoo harddrive on primary master on the IDE cable its on the outside (A) GRUB reads it as hd(0,0) and the Windows XP is on on the inside of the cable its (B) GRUB reads it as hd(1,0)
Now in my bios I can go in and turn off the Gentoo hardrive (primary disk 0) and it will boot into Windows XP, I've done with out the gentoo at all and it willboot into it as well.
I read something about trying this??? Is this so?

I had a similar problem that I fixed by using 'map' in the config file If this doesn't specifically work, there's a bunch of posts similar to yours if you search for 'grub map'. Like
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=215944
I think the following will work for your setup.
# Windows
title Windows
map (hd0) (hd1)
map (hd1) (hd0)
root (hd1,0)
chainloader +1
By swapping the drives names, you trick windows into thinking it's the first in the list of hard drives. It has problems if it isn't.
Also, the 'root' ignores mappings, so that's why I kept 'root (hd1,0)' instead of 'root (hd0,0)' |
