For some reason, after a large Portage update (emerge -u world), and updating my config files with etc-update, su stopped working. I can't use the kde su program, and I can't su to root in a console. It's really weird, because I know I'm typing the right password, I've tried it many times, and I can login as root normally! Any help?

That happened once to me. It looks like your etc-update erased your /etc/group file. Just re-add your normal user to the proper groups and you should be alright.

lol - no :P
I just switched from Redhat to Gentoo, so I had no clue about needing to be in a special group to use SU, and it must have been removed (As the other post said) when I did the etc-update. All fixed now, thank you!
