bare with me .
i'd like to ask for lots of help (always the case) on several issues:
1. this netmount message on boot *
2. this is "machine name".unknown_domain (Linux i686 2.4.26) TIME (last message on startup) **
3. bringing eth0 up via dhcp... message on boot (times out EVENTUALLY) ***
4. where can i find log of all boot messages shown (i check /var/logs), didn't find it.
5. anyone found a better way of shutting down other than shutdown -h now ****
6. error message on startup of gnome about find internet address *****
* Error: Problem starting needed services. "netmount" was not started. Do i have to have netmount start as default? i dont need it to connect to network or internet at boot, only later when i type adsl-start.
** how do i add a domain name (file and syntax please) (checked /etc/hosts, resolv.conf, dnsdomainname(unsure what to put))
*** same as 1*. I dont think i need this. I use pppoe for my DSL. And this is the most irretating thing on bootup, it sits there for ages while it looks for network/internet connection info. PLEASE tell me how to stop this (supply command along with knowledge)
**** seen a lot of forums about this issue with shutdown, some people talk about acpi but supply no commands or help, like edit your file and then recompile kernel (that sorta talk for a noob is hard, what file, how to recompile etc etc).
***** i went to /etc/hosts to add the info but i have a dynamic IP, so what can i enter for IP and for domain what do i enter. (can i trick it). relates to question 2**.
i DO need networking and internet , just not on boot. incase there is/was some misunderstanding.
Thank you, if you can help on any of the points above. |

alright, netmount fails when dhcp times out, therefore... u are not connected to a network, all u have to do is connect to network (plug in cable) and type
Code: | /etc/init.d/net.eth0 start |
that should get ur ethernet going,
for boot messages, just type
this should help you with ur hostname setup:

But if you have ADSL, then perhaps you have no network.
Now, if your comp is not attached to a network then you should not start any network-related services upon boot. No ssh, no ntp no nothing.
But I think your fundamental issue is why you donät start adsl at boot? You can create a net.ppp0 script and have your adsl connect at bootu-up and then all your problems will dissapear.
Oh, and do try to make your titles reflect the subject. Since we are not discussing cuban tabaco the title is not very descriptive. _________________ Part of "The adopt an unanswered post initiative" |
